Promoting the Church School: Identity

Laverne Martin urges church and school leaders to lead schools with the end in mind and deliberately design their path rather than merely reacting to threats. Using the analogy of an Air Canada flight that must follow a precise flight plan or risk landing miles off course, he argues that schools need more than a list of things to avoid; they need clear mission, vision, and values to keep them on track. A clear example can be seen in Jesus’ life, both from Luke 4 (mission) and the Great Commission (vision). Martin points out how values guide schools in making sure that day-to-day choices stay aligned with the vision. Ultimately, a school’s identity must be grounded in Jesus, and boards should intentionally shape their schools so that graduates emerge ready to advance God’s purposes.
